THE MONSTROUS BLUES - A POCKET FULL OF MOON ROCKS CD

The late nineties is where things began for The Monstrous Blues but the seeds for the project were planted much earlier. Around a decade before the band were even thought of, Steve O’Brien (drums) and Paul Hausmeister (guitar) first played together in cult Australian garage punk band The Unheard. In the early nineties to pair went on to form Tumbleweed, one of Australia’s most successful rock bands of that decade.

During the early and mid nineties as Tumbleweed toured the nation playing festivals and released high profile albums, Jay Betchwar (Vocals/Guitar) and Simon Dalla Pozza (Bass) were part of the next generation on the Wollongong rock scene. With a strong sense of community, the cities bands would turn up to watch each other and often share band members.

This atmosphere cultivated The Monstrous Blues. When O’Brien and Hausmeister parted ways with Tumbleweed, their new musical focus became The Monstrous Blues. After a couple of years writing and rehearsing, the group hit the live scene in the late nineties with a sonic impact and almost immediate response. They quickly recorded their debut ep ‘High Octane’, which was released in 2001. The title track would land them Triple J air play and numerous appearances on surfing films.

The following year, the four piece returned to the studio to record their debut full length album. The result was the 2003 release ‘Colourblind’. The band backed the release with regular east coast tours and was invited to play a live set on Triple J.

While regular touring and high profile supports continued over the next few years, the demise of the bands label meant the two releases became deleted and personal commitments meant the band went into hiatus in 2008.

In mid 2009 it was announced that the original line up of Tumbleweed would reform featuring O’Brien and Hausmeister. With The Monstrous Blues releases long out of print and strong interest in the Tumbleweed return and related projects, the decision was made to re-issue the two releases on one disc, so here you have ‘A Pocket Full Of Moon Rocks’.

Maybe they’ll play live again one day, but for the moment it is time to re-live what you fondly remember, or catch up with what you missed.
